Flood Safety Awareness Week

This week (March 18-22, 2013) is Flood Safety Awareness Week.  A century ago riparian communities in the American Midwest were flooding, so I'm guessing that designating this week as devoted to flood safety was no coincidence.

The Red Cross website has many helpful suggestions to prepare for flooding.  If you live in low-lying areas near rivers or streams, you need to know what to do when waters rise.  Fortunately, I live well above the flood plain, so I'll be high and dry.  Not everybody is so fortunate, so planning ahead could save lives (human and companion animals) as well as personal belongings.

Take steps to protect your families (including, and especially, your animals) and property.  We seem to be suffering these devastating floods more now than we used to.  Better safe than sorry.

P.S.  Gordon Lightfoot wrote "High and Dry" as a cautionary tale about leaving one's significant other to run-off with exciting sailor-type adventurers.  The song was included on the LP Sundown (1974), which topped the American and Canadian album charts.
