Banned Books Week, Day Two

Day two of ALA Banned Books Week brings two more book trailers featuring banned or challenged library books.  Would-be censors have criticized both books on the grounds of "foul language"; supposedly objectionable character portrayal based on race, ethnicity, or religion; and sexual implications or overtones.  Some reviews indicate that both books are appropriate for readers ages 12 and older, while others suggest that an age range of 16 years or above would be more suitable to the serious themes each book contains.  Thankfully, you can decide for yourselves whether or not you would like to read these books.  We hope our book trailers help in summarizing the plots and themes to enable you to make an informed decision.

Summer of My German Soldier, by Bette Greene

To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

P.S.  Jeannie C. Riley, shown here in a live television performance, recorded "Harper Valley P.T.A." (1968), written by Tom T. Hall.  Released as a single, the song sold over six million copies worldwide.  The song is not about book censorship, but there is a judgmental, censorship quality to the scenario, as conservative school partisans put-down the mother of the character singing the song for her (the mother's) "immoral" and scandalous behavior.  People in positions of political, social, or economic power are typically the ones involved in attempts to curtail behavior or information to which they personally object.
